Soul Garden

And even though your days seem hollow
Encounters with others unbearably shallow
Even though in spirit you may have long left
Following the river in search of its cleft.

With your heart in your chest as heavy as a stone
You soldier on, weary and shattered to the bone
Wondering, puzzled, when life became so raw
Your lament fades away... You ask no one anymore.

The veil around your heart sewed with your own hands
To shield you from pain as you walk through life’s desertland
And protect you from any hurt and dismay
You realize only pushed people further away.

Hearing the battles fighting loud in your head
You seek resolution to the thoughts you have fed
To yourself over time, as you played cut and run
Please heave the veil and stretch towards to the sun.

And laugh, laugh at what doesn't make you cry
Laugh with the birds as they pass you flying by
Laugh and return to the garden of your soul
Which bears all you need to make you feel whole.

As you open the gates, rusty after the thaw
You notice the writing in gold on the door
Cascades of sweet flowers in the garden thronging
"Life's call to us never ends. We can't unlearn longing."
